ACT Prep

at MEK Review

Beginning in April 2025, the ACT is changing, and MEK wants you to have all the info you need to prepare!

Ms. Rachel Erwin, Dean of Faculty and English Teacher at MEK Review

The ACT is changing.

The ACT is becoming shorter and more efficient than ever before. The following changes will be implemented in April 2025:

  • 44 fewer questions overall

  • More time per question

  • Shorter test length: Students will have up to 125 minutes of testing instead of up to 195.

  • Fewer answer choices in the math questions: four instead of five.

  • Students will be able to choose whether to take the ACT with or without the science sections.

The MEK Solution

To provide students with an engaging solution to their ACT test prep, MEK is launching our new and improved ACT Prep Program, comprised of virtual and in-person group classes.

These group classes, modeled after our widely successful SAT Prep Program, are tiered by performance level into the following courses:

  • ACT Foundation: for students scoring lower than 26

  • ACT 30: for students scoring between 27 and 30

  • ACT 34: for students scoring above 30

Students are continuously reassessed for opportunities to move up to the next level. These levels are put in place to provide students with smaller, more attainable goals on their way to their goal scores.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I get placed into a class?

Once you place your deposit, our Enrollment Team will be in touch with you to discuss your class placement. They will ask you the following:

Have you taken an PreACT during the current academic year?
Have you taken an
official ACT within the past three months?
What is your current math level in school?

If you have taken a PreACT or official ACT, we ask that you send your official score reports to [email protected] so our Counseling and Teaching Teams can place you in the level that will serve you best.

Who should take the ACT vs. the SAT?

The ultimate decision of whether to take the ACT vs. the SAT comes down to a few different factors:

Personal Preference: The two tests are similar in scope but different in format and pacing. MEK recommends that students who are on the fence about which test to take try both evaluation tests and see which one they feel more comfortable taking.

Math Level: One of the few differences in the scope of the two tests is the breadth of math topics. Unlike the SAT that tests primarily Algebra 2 and Geometry concepts, the ACT touches upon Pre-Calculus topics that students will have difficulty with if they have not been exposed to them before.

There are many other factors that can play into your decision. If you need help deciding, you can reach out to our Counseling Team to schedule a consultation to discuss more!

When should I take the official ACT?

Once students start preparing for the ACT, they will have a much better idea of what they know vs. what they need to know in order to master the test contents. If you don't have an official ACT test scheduled, we recommend that you wait to register for one until you start ACT prep. This way, our Counseling and Teaching Teams can help you navigate strategic times to take the ACT and design a study plan accordingly.

Does MEK offer any other ACT Prep resources?

Yes! We also offer one-on-one tutoring for students who cannot be accommodated by our group classes. If you are interested in private ACT prep tutoring, please fill out this Tutoring Interest Form, and our Tutoring Department will be in touch with you to help you plan the tutoring regimen that best fits your needs.
