Prepare your child for the NJSLA this Spring in just 10 weeks!

The 2025 NJSLA is coming! Is your student prepared?

The NJSLA (New Jersey Student Learning Assessment) is New Jersey's Common Core assessment. On this exam, students are tested on the topics that they are expected to have learned during the past academic year in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Science.

At MEK, we prepare 4th through 8th grade students for the English and Math sections of the NJSLA, as these sections have the greatest effect on students' future trajectories.

What is the NJSLA used for?

The NJSLA is used as a tool for revising and enhancing students' academic ability, setting standards and expectations for them to gain expertise, knowledge, and skills. It allows students to evaluate themselves, as well as teachers and schools to assess their own performance throughout the school year.

However, the NJSLA score report is also used in the admissions considerations for many competitive public magnet and private schools. For example, the Bergen County Academies, Bergen Tech, Union County Vocational Technical Schools, Monmouth County Vocational School District schools, and Middlesex County Vocational Technical Schools require that these score reports are submitted as part of their applications.

For students who aren't applying to competitive schools, the NJSLA exams are also used by some schools to consider placement in higher level honors courses.

Make sure your child is ready for the NJSLA this Spring with the NJSLA Boot Camp at MEK!

What does the actual NJSLA look like?

The official NJSLA exam consists of three one-hour units for both English and Math sections. The entire test spans six hours, and, depending on the school administering the exam, is generally split over multiple days.

For current students, would this boot camp be redundant with their current MEK curriculum?

No, it wouldn't be redundant! The NJSLA Boot Camps take a test-prep approach to the Common Core concepts, and their curricula are framed around the weekly practice tests that students take before the session.

Current students in the MEK Learning Circles or Exam Prep 8 courses are not covering the same content of this boot camp. We recommend taking this boot camp for a more comprehensive prep strategy!

Does my student need to take an evaluation test before joining the NJSLA Boot Camp?

No, there is no evaluation test required for this Boot Camp! As long as you're signing up your child for the boot camp that aligns with their current grade level, you're all set!

However, for 8th graders, it's important to sign up for the correct Math level. Confirm whether your child is taking regular Math or Algebra 1 in class before registering!

Students who still want to take an evaluation test to assess their current performance level are still welcome to take an evaluation test! Sign up here!
